Öğe A new look at the measurement and concept of future time perspective(Istanbul Univ, 2018) Doğruyol, Burak; Oglaç, AdaA new look at the measurement and concept of future time perspective shows that it has the potential to influence human emotion and cognition, well-being, and psychopathological symptoms. Therefore, especially following the Zimbardo Time Perspective approach and using its relevant measure, the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI), time perspective has attracted the attention of researchers. Future time perspective, with its ambiguous and uncertain nature, has attracted special attention among the past, present, and future perspectives. However, measurement and conceptualization of future time perspective is complex, and research in this field produced mixed and contradictory results. Therefore, the aim of the current study is to investigate the relationship between different future time perspective measures in order to provide a theoretical explanation about mixed findings and further the validity of relevant measures. In the current study, the relationship between different future time perspective measures was investigated using 311 participants. In order to measure future time perspective, the Future subscale of the ZTPI, the Future subscale of the Balanced Time perspective Scale (BTPS), and the Attitudes Towards Future Scale (ATFS) were administered. The results of correlation and second-order factor analyses revealed that the ZTPI-Future subscale is compatible with planned future subscale of ATFS. Thus, the ZTPI-Future subscale seems to measure the cognitive component of the future time perspective. The results indicated that future time perspective is a multi-dimensional construct that includes qualitatively distinct components.Öğe Activating reflective thinking with decision justification and debiasing training(Soc Judgment & Decision Making, 2020) İşler, Ozan; Yılmaz, Onurcan; Doğruyol, BurakManipulations for activating reflective thinking, although regularly used in the literature, have not previously been systematically compared. There are growing concerns about the effectiveness of these methods as well as increasing demand for them. Here, we study five promising reflection manipulations using an objective performance measure - the Cognitive Reflection Test 2 (CRT-2). In our large-scale preregistered online experiment (N = 1,748), we compared a passive and an active control condition with time delay, memory recall, decision justification, debiasing training, and combination of debiasing training and decision justification. We found no evidence that online versions of the two regularly used reflection conditions - time delay and memory recall - improve cognitive performance. Instead, our study isolated two less familiar methods that can effectively and rapidly activate reflective thinking: (1) a brief debiasing training, designed to avoid common cognitive biases and increase reflection, and (2) simply asking participants to justify their decisions.Öğe Do self-presentatıon tactıcs medıate the relatıonshıp between self-regulatory orıentatıons and problematıc ınternet use?(2019) Doğruyol, Burak; Karabağır, EceProblematic Internet use has been an important topic for researchers. Though, (problematic) Internet use is a motivated action, underlying motivations are largely unexamined. Therefore, in the current study, effects of selfregulatory orientations (i.e., promotion and prevention self-regulatory foci) with the mediating role of selfpresentation tactics on problematic Internet use was examined on 225 university students who use the Internet mostly for social network sites (SNSs). Portrait Values Questionnaire was used to determine participants’ selfregulatory orientations (prevention focus and promotion focus). Self-Presentation Tactics Scale was used to determine the type of mainly used tactics (defensive and assertive) on SNSs. Problematic Internet Use Scale was used to determine the consequences of their Internet use. Results revealed that neither prevention focus, nor promotion focus orientations directly predict problematic Internet use. As expected, defensive self-presentation tactics mediate the relationship between promotion focus and problematic Internet use. Therefore, focusing on gains –rather than a loss- on the SNSs leads to more defensive self-presentation tactics which in turn leads to problematic Internet use.Öğe Drivers’ self-reported reasons of speeding: A Turkish driver sample from two cities(Gioacchino Onorati Editore, 2019) Bıçaksız, Pınar; Doğruyol, Burak; Erdost, Begüm Gür; Hoe, C.H.; Gupta, S.; Lajunen, T.; Özkan, TürkerSpeeding is an important risk factor of road traffic crashes, and identifying the factors associated with speeding is crucial for road safety. In the present study, face-to-face roadside interviews were conducted to investigate the reasons of speeding among Turkish drivers at six different data collection times in two different cities. A structured interview was administered to collect data from a total of 3317 and 1559 drivers in Ankara and Afyon cities, respectively. Results from the two cities consistently revealed that drivers’ self-reported speeding frequency was partially determined by gender and age. Also, perceiving speeding as a cause of crashes was associated with lower frequency of speeding. Finally, thinking that speed tickets are a means for increasing government income and that it would be safe to exceed the speed limit if driving “safely” was positively associated with frequency of speeding. These findings indicate the importance of norms and (biased) perceptions in speeding behavior. © 2019, Gioacchino Onorati Editore. Bulgular, gelecek perspektifinin çok boyutlu vefarklı bileşenleri olan bir yapısı olduğuna işaret etmektedir.Öğe Looking from the bright side: The light triad predicts tinder use for love(Sage Publications Ltd, 2020) Sevi, Barış; Doğruyol, BurakThe Dark Triad of personality has gained much attention in the literature, while the lighter side of personality has not received comparable attention. This study aimed to examine how the Light Triad of personality traits (Faith in Humanity, Humanism, and Kantianism) differs between Tinder users, and how these personality traits are related to motivations to use Tinder for short- and long-term mating. Cross-sectional data from current Tinder users (n = 130), past Tinder users (n = 56), and people who have never used Tinder (n = 121) were examined. The results revealed that compared to Tinder users, nonusers have higher scores on Kantianism, which might be related to Kantians not emphasizing attractiveness, a factor that has a role in online dating success. Further, Tinder users with higher total scores on the Light Triad were found to show higher motivation to use Tinder for long-term mating, whereas a significant relation was not found motivation to use Tinder for short-term mating. Long-term mating requires establishing a cooperative relationship with someone, and the motivation to use Tinder to find long-term mates may be due to the cooperation-promoting nature of the Light Triad.Öğe Psychological factors related to problematic ınternet and smartphone use(2020) Aka, Başak Türküler; Kalecik, Sezen; Doğruyol, BurakIn today’s world, internet and smartphones have become essential parts of our lives. Besides their advantages, there are also some drawbacks regarding their usage. To investigate these drawbacks, problematic internet and smartphone use has been separately investigated within the scope of behavioral addiction. In parallel to this, present study aimed to investigate the relationship between problematic internet and smartphone use and psychological factors that were related to diverse addictive disorders in a Turkish sample. It was hypothesized that emotion regulation, self-control, depression and social anxiety symptoms, and novelty seeking would predict problematic internet and smartphone use. Data was collected from 337 adults between the ages of 18 and 66 (M = 28.86, SD = 9.72). The results showed that although social anxiety and depression symptoms as well as low self-control predicted problematic internet and smartphone use; novelty seeking predicted only problematic smartphone use. Additionally, difficulties in emotion regulation did not predict problematic internet and smartphone use.Öğe Psychometric properties of the Turkish version of the interpersonal emotion regulation questionnaire (IERQ)(Springer/Plenum Publishers, 2019) Koç, Melisa Sevi; Aka, Başak Türküler; Doğruyol, Burak; Curtiss, Joshua; Carpenter, Joseph Kevin; Hofmann, Stefan G.Despite a vast amount of literature regarding emotion regulation throughout the years, the interpersonal emotion regulation has been underestimated to a large extent until the past few years. With the purpose of encouraging and filling the gap of research on interpersonal emotion regulation, Hofmann et al. (Cognitive Therapy and Research, 40(3), 341-356, 2016) have developed Interpersonal Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (IERQ). The current study aims to conduct the adaptation study of Interpersonal Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (IERQ) into Turkish culture and assess its psychometric properties. To the best of our knowledge, interpersonal emotion regulation as a culture-sensitive construct has not been tested in a non-western culture with distinct interpersonal relationship dynamics. Results revealed that the proposed four-factor model fits the data sufficiently and thus provided support for the original factor structure proposed by Hofmann et al. (Cognitive Therapy and Research, 40(3), 341-356, 2016). Overall, results revealed that the Turkish version of IERQ is a valid and reliable self-report measure which can be used to assess the ways individuals utilize others to regulate their own emotions.Öğe The concept of wisdom in Turkish cultural context(2019) Doğruyol, BurakBilgelik kavramının Türk örneklemindeki örtük teorilerini ortaya koymak amacıyla, bilgeliğin tanımı ve içeriğinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bulgular, ilgili yazın bağlamında tartışılmıştır.Öğe The five-factor model of the moral foundations theory is stable across WEIRD and non-WEIRD cultures(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2019) Doğruyol, Burak; Alper, Sinan; Yılmaz, OnurcanAlthough numerous models attempted to explain the nature of moral judgment, moral foundations theory (MFT) led to a paradigmatic change in this field by proposing pluralist "moralities" (care, fairness, loyalty, authority, sanctity). The five-factor structure of MFT is thought to be universal and rooted in the evolutionary past but the evidence is scarce regarding the stability of this five-factor structure across diverse cultures. We tested this universality argument in a cross-cultural dataset of 30 diverse societies spanning the WEIRD (Western, educated, industrialized, rich, democratic) and non-WEIRD cultures by testing measurement invariance of the short-form of the moral foundations questionnaire. The results supported the original conceptualization that there are at least five diverse moralities although loadings of items differ across WEIRD and non-WEIRD cultures. In other words, the current research shows for the first time that the five-factor structure of MFT is stable in the WEIRD and non-WEIRD cultures.
