Behind the Youtube addiction and online stickiness.Does fear of missing out count?
(2024) Durmuş, Beril; Ekizler, Hüseyin; Bolelli, Murat
As social media has evolved into a predominant aspect of daily life, with over 5 billion users globally, understanding the motivations behind user engagement is essential. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between loneliness, self-esteem, FoMO (Fear of Missing Out), YouTube addiction, and online stickiness concepts. This study hypothesizes that self-esteem and loneliness significantly affect FoMO, which in turn influences YouTube addiction and online stickiness. Data were collected from Turkish adults using an online survey tool with convenience sampling method. Confirmatory Factor Analysis, correlation, and path analyses were conducted to test the research hypotheses. The findings indicate positive and significant correlations, as well as the effect of self-esteem on FoMO. Additionally, loneliness was found to be negatively correlated with FoMO Social Experience and positively correlated with FoMO Rewarding Experience, whereas no significant effect of loneliness on both dimensions was found. FoMO Social Experience and FoMO Rewarding Experience were positively correlated with YouTube addiction, and FoMO Social Experience had a significant effect on YouTube addiction. Finally, YouTube addiction is strongly correlated with online stickiness, and its effect on it is significant. The implications of the results are discussed, and future research areas are suggested.

A systems approach to understanding the interconnected factors affecting rural development: A case study from Türkiye
(Elsevier Ltd, 2024) Zor, Ümmügülsüm; Esen, Ayla; Canbulut, Murad; Karaca, Nevran; Karakaya, Gencay; Türker, İpek
Rural development plays a crucial role in the advancement of developing countries such as Türkiye, necessitating a comprehensive examination of the factors that shape this process. This research aims to provide a holistic view of interconnected factors affecting rural development. A qualitative and participatory research methodology was used, which included focus group meetings with various stakeholder groups. Data from the focus group meetings were analyzed through network analysis to gain insight into the relationships between topics discussed. The network analysis results were then utilized to structure a model for rural development using a systems approach, depicting the main inputs for, enablers of, and outputs of rural development. Our results suggest that government support through policymaking and support of critical non-governmental organizations (NGOs) through projects and programs are key inputs for rural development. Support should focus on providing education and training programs to the local community, improving technology and digitalization, empowering local stakeholders, and ensuring economic and social integration of community groups, specifically women and youth. The authors conclude that these enablers of rural development will ensure efficient and effective practices in value-creating economic activities, specifically agricultural activities, leading to improved wealth and well-being in local rural communities.

Coopetition and non-profit performance in war-torn region: role of outside knowledge and innovative climate
(Altınbaş Üniversitesi, 2023) Gulshan, Bella; Liaqat, Muhammad Mohsen
The inconsistent findings on the association between non-profit coopetition and performance are complicated and contingent on essential factors. However, our current understanding of the circumstances under which non-profit coopetition matters to performance is limited. We take a novel context to address this question and build on the combined literature from the emerging non-profit coopetition literature. This study conceptualises and tests the impact of coopetition (simultaneous cooperation and competition) on the organisational performance of non-profit organisations in a war-torn region. Notably, it investigates the simultaneous cooperation and competition in non-profits’ social and financial performance via outside knowledge and innovative climate. An in-person survey with 158 executives and board members was conducted in Baghdad Governorate, Iraq. The survey adopted reliable and valid scales to measure the variables. Structural equation modelling was applied to test the mediation model. The proposed sequential mediating model has a good model fit with all four hypotheses statistically significant. Nonprofit engagement in coopetition positively affects organisation performance via mediators: use of outside knowledge and innovative climate. Cooperation with competitors helps non-profits to effectively use the outside knowledge that forms an innovative climate at the organisational level. Additionally, the use of outside knowledge has a direct effect on performance. Non-profits should integrate outside and internal knowledge to generate sustainable financial and social performance opportunities, especially in turbulent or war-torn regions. Moreover, context is imperative for non-profit leaders to identify themselves and seek inter-organisational relationships. The study also provides theoretical and practical implications that help non-profit leaders innovate and increase organisational performance.

Disclosure quality of goodwill impairment testing: evidence from Turkey
(Inderscience Publishers, 2022) Akbaba, Caner; İbiş, Cemal; Yanık, Serhat; Aytürk, Yusuf
Goodwill-related disclosure quality is an emerging research question that needs to be investigated. In practice, audit firms control the disclosures in financial reports by using a checklist that results in a boilerplate reporting format of insufficient information. This study examines possible determinants of goodwill-related disclosure quality in Turkey. We use a unique hand-collected panel dataset of listed Turkish non-financial companies for the period between 2014 and 2018 and calculate a disclosure index. Our results show that firm-specific variables of size, ownership structure, and level of debt are related to disclosure quality of goodwill impairment testing and the magnitude of the goodwill reported is positively linked to disclosure quality. More important, our results indicate that auditor size improves the disclosure quality and boilerplate goodwill-related disclosures are prevalent among Turkish public companies.

The evaluation of pharmaceutical packaging pictograms via eye tracking technique
    (2022) Memişoğlu, Merve; Girişken, Yener
Background: Various visual tools are used to improve medication adherence in communication with the patient. Pharmaceutical pictograms are one such tool utilized within this communication process. Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the eye movement of the participants and to recommend the most suitable location of pictograms on pharmaceutical packaging accordingly. It also aims to show whether there is a significant correlation between the effectiveness of pictograms and the health literacy, age, and gender of the participant. Methods: Forty-two participants were exposed to sixty stimuli showing four different pharmaceutical packages as an on-screen slide show. Participants were asked what they understood from the pictograms on the packaging, and their eye movements were examined using eye tracking to determine heat maps and areas of interest, and to measure the time to first fixation, total fixation duration, and percentage fixated. Results: The study revealed that the understanding level of the pictograms was determined at between 11.9 % and 71.43 %. Among the pictograms, only a small percentage 13% - namely numbers 12 and 13 which were prepared and validated by the FIP, achieved a score of 67%, the minimum level of comprehension in accordance with ISO 3684. We observed that participants fixated at least once on the pictograms up to 95% of the time. The pictograms were found to be most easily noticed at the center with a secondary focus area towards center-right parts of the packaging. Vertical design was highly engaging for participants regardless of health literacy. The significant relationship was found between the understanding of the pictograms and gender when mean values are examined. However, no significant relationship was between health literacy and pictogram comprehension level. Conclusions: This is the first study to have used eye tracking to analyze pictograms added to real pharmaceutical packaging on the market. Its findings can guide pharmaceutical companies to design their packaging in a way that prioritizes patient safety, and to place critical pictograms more effectively. These results can be adapted medication label design in hospitals to promote appropriate use. Studies to improve patient adherence by using pictograms should be diversified.

The impact of customer dissatisfaction regarding revenue management on perceptions of airline experience and loyalty
(2022) Uslu, Tanyeri; Karakadılar, İbrahim Sarper
This chapter examines the effects of the complaints about the practices of revenue management (RM) on the travel experience perception and loyalty of the customers. The analysis shows that the complaints about the RM practices have positive effects on the travel experience perception, and the travel experience perception has a positive effect on the loyalty of the customer who travel short distances. The results of the detailed sub-hypothesis test performed in relation to the travel purposes of the customers and the business model adopted by an airline company show that the companies which adopt low-cost business model are obliged to manage their RM practices on a much more customer-centric basis. The companies in the sector should develop special customer programs for their customer segments which remain outside the business purpose. Thus, the operational efficiency will increase, and revenues will be maximized.

Social media and mindfulness: From the fear of missing out (FOMO) to the joy of missing out (JOMO)
(John Wiley and Sons Inc., 2022) Chan, Steven S.; Van Solt, Michelle; Cruz, Ryan E.; Philp, Matthew; Bahl, Shalini; Serin, Nuket; Amaral, Nelson Borges; Schindler, Robert; Bartosiak, Abbey; Kumar, Smriti; Canbulut, Murad
Mindless use of social media may lead to negative mental health outcomes for consumers. In this research, the authors focus on the fear of missing out (FOMO) as a key determinant of those negative outcomes by illustrating how repeated social media use forms a habit loop termed “social media FOMO.” The authors introduce a “Social Media FOMO to JOMO” framework, where they describe how mindless use can lead to social media FOMO and propose a novel Social Media Mindfulness Practice (SMMP) as a remedy to help consumers reduce FOMO and adopt a path called the joy of missing out (JOMO) that provides greater well-being. Based on the “Social Media FOMO to JOMO” framework and the SMMP, the authors suggest future research and highlight implications for consumers, marketers, and policy makers to promote more mindful social media use.

What is neuroentrepreneurship? The theoretical framework, critical evaluation, and research program
    (2021) Girişken, Arzu; Çakar, Tuna
As interest in entrepreneurship research to identify the possible economic development opportunities that entrepreneurs can provide, entrepreneurship research's objective tools are reaching their limits. Researchers in entrepreneurship are striving to discover new techniques and methodologies to answer questions about what makes a person an entrepreneur and perhaps identify and encourage an entrepreneur in the next step. Although a great deal of research has been done to answer these questions scientifically, traditional techniques have failed to produce the desired answers. For this reason, researchers working in the entrepreneurship field have recently been increasingly interested in applying neuroscience methods, especially after the proliferation of research fields such as neuroeconomics, neuromarketing, and neuropolitics. Although the population of neuroentrepreneurship research is gradually increasing, we cannot say that the field has been studied theoretically enough yet. In this article, a theoretical definition of neuroentrepreneurship is made, and a scientific framework is tried to be gained on the way to future research.

Good forecasting or information leakage explaining market behavior prior to the announcement of sovereign rating downgrades: Evidence from Turkey
(2020) Kılıç, Saim; Alp, Ali; Delikanlı, İhsan Uğur
This paper aims to empirically test the impact of Turkey’s sovereign credit rating downgrades by three major credit rating agencies on the Borsa İstanbul equity market prior to the official announcement, and to ascertain whether any significant impact found is due to market players’ accurate forecasting or information leakages. In this paper, the effects of nine downgrade announcements between 2016 and 2018 are analyzed using the Event Study method. In eight of the nine events, statistically significant negative cumulative abnormal returns were estimated during the five trading days before the announcement. Evidence suggests that three of the eight events reflected information leakage to the market, and five indicated sound forecasting by market players alongside some information leakage. These results reveal that it is necessary to take preventive measures against information leakage before the announcement of the ratings assessments

Factors influencing SMEs’ capital structure: A comparative analysis from Turkey
(Taylor&Francis, 2021) Delikanlı, İhsan; Kılıç, Saim
This paper aims to analyse the factors affecting SMEs’ capital structure decisions with a comparative analysis covering SMEs of different sizes in Turkey from 2007 to 2018. According to the study results, no significant difference is observed based on firm size. Secondly, as SMEs’ assets grow and efficiency increases, their financial debt also rises. Asset growth leads to long-term debt, while efficiency increase generates short-term borrowing. However, as profitability increases, long-term borrowing decreases. The findings show that SMEs try to meet their financing needs with internal resources, acting in alignment with the pecking order theory. Thirdly, no relationship is identified between financial debt and SMEs’ liquidity strength, risk, and asset structure. This finding likely indicates that SMEs do not act with financial stress or agency costs in mind. That is, they do not act in alignment with the trade-off theory.

Working capital management and firm performance in the hospitality and tourism industry
(International Journal of Hospitality Management, 2022) Chambers, Nurgül
The aim of this study is to provide empirical evidence concerning the effects of working capital on firm performance in the hospitality and tourism industry. We identify an inverted U-shaped relationship between working capital and firm performance. More specifically, the U-shaped relationship exists for accommodation, food and travel firms. In contrast, a positive linear relationship is valid for sport firms while changes in working capital have no effect on performance for gambling firms. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first empirical research study to extend cross-country analysis in respect of sub-hospitality and tourism industries to a worldwide context. The findings suggest that hospitality and tourism managers should consider the diversity of relationships between working capital and firm performance in sub-hospitality and tourism industries when deciding on an appropriate strategy for working capital management.

Örgu¨tsel performans ve işveren markası arasındaki ilişkiyi beyin göru¨ntu¨leme yöntemiyle ölçu¨mlemeye dair keşfedici bir çalışma
(Ömer Halisdemir Üniversitesi İktisadi ve İdari Bilimler Fakültesi, 2021)
Interdisciplinary approaches’ve started to come up frequently in management sciences. On the professional axis, the importance of understanding them better by using interdisciplinary methods in order to make organizations more efficient and increase the performance of employees has started to be understood. It is possible to find studies in which the concepts of employer brand and corporate brand personality are used together in the literature. But there is no study in the literature in which employees' employer brand perception is measured by brain imaging methods in terms of brand personality variables. It’s thought that understanding the emotional reactions of employees with brain imaging methods will add a new dimension to the concept of employer branding. The main reason for this is that people have difficulties articulating their emotional reactions. Unexpressed emotions were identified with fNIRS (functional near infrared spectroscopy), one of the neuroimaging methods. In the fNIRS measurements, it was determined what brand personality adjectives will be used as variables by the preliminary literature review. Afterwards, it was determined how much each variable associated with the employer’s logo. Thus, employer brand perception was investigated in terms of brand personality adjectives in order to increase organizational performance without any cognitive articulations.
